Vote explanations on government transparency, tipped wage, and sick time policies.

“While this plan is far from perfect, we fought tooth and nail to secure protections for our tipped workers and small businesses,” said Smit, R-Martin. “Senate Democrats didn’t want to do anything. The radical wing of their party was ready to watch tipped workers get laid off and small businesses close, all in the name of so-called ‘fairness.’ House Republicans didn’t let that happen. From day one, we were the adults in the room, and we continued to drag Democrats to the negotiating table until we secured a common-sense solution.”

State Rep. Rachelle Smit has been sworn in for her second term in office. Michigan’s 103rd legislative term began following Wednesday’s swearing-in ceremony.

Smit was elected by elected by her House colleagues to serve as speaker pro-tempore for the 2025-26 legislative session, making her second in line in leadership of the 110 members of the legislative body. The speaker pro tempore presides over House proceedings, moderates debate, makes rulings on procedure and announces the results of votes in the absence of the Speaker of the House.

“It’s been my goal since my first day in office to safeguard our elections, and that’s what this proposed amendment would do,” said Smit, R-Martin. “Basic proof of citizenship and voter ID ensures that every person engaging in our democratic process is in fact eligible to vote.”
