Rep. Wozniak calls on Secretary of State to comply with House subpoena, release election training material

State Rep. Doug Wozniak, R-Shelby Township, today calls on Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson to comply with a subpoena issued by the House and turn over election training material requested by the legislators.

“Transparency is not optional,” Wozniak said. “Lawmakers need access to accurate and timely information to legislate responsibly and protect the integrity of our elections. The Secretary of State’s refusal to cooperate is not only disappointing, but also a disservice to every Michigan voter.”

For more than five months, the Secretary of State has refused to provide legislators with basic election training information her office provides to election clerks throughout the state. The House Oversight Committee authorized the subpoena on April 15, and it was presented to the Department of State earlier this week.

Wozniak said a thorough legislative review of election training materials is critical given the concerning track record Benson has with handing down illegal guidance and rules to clerks. Michigan Courts have regularly struck down rules issued by Benson because of clear violations of state law.

“Michiganders deserve to know that their elections are secure and that the systems in place are being properly overseen,” Wozniak said. “This subpoena is about ensuring oversight, restoring confidence, and upholding the Legislature’s duty to the communities we serve.”
