State Rep. Donni Steele yesterday secured House approval of legislation designed to strengthen penalties for acts of terrorism, requiring a mandatory minimum of 25 years’ incarceration for individuals who carry out these acts knowingly and with premeditation.

“This is about protecting our communities,” said Steele (R-Orion Township). “Those who intentionally commit these horrific crimes should face serious consequences. Terrorism has no place in Michigan, and this legislation helps ensure those who carry out these acts are held accountable.”

Steele developed the legislation in collaboration with Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen public safety.

House Bill 5831 now advances to the Senate for further consideration.
